KUALA LUMPUR: Mobile data technology enabler Macro Kiosk Bhd has launched a secure SMS (short message service) application that only allows intended recipients to access their SMS messages after they have keyed in a password.

The homegrown technology provider said its Secure Messaging application does not require users to change their cellphones, and is particularly useful for companies which need to ensure the confidential delivery and receipt of SMS messages.

Cellphone users who want to subscribe to the service must first choose a six-digit security code. To retrieve a secured SMS, the recipient must then enter the six-digit code before the system sends the SMS to the recipient.

Arguing that it is more than merely "property lost" when someone loses a cellphone, Marco Kiosk chief executive officer Kenny Goh said: “Confidential information in the form of SMSes could reside in a cellphone, and losing it could mean losing sensitive information.”

Macro Kiosk said the service would benefit industries such as financial institutions, where information security is of paramount importance.

It added that banks could use Secure Messaging to send account details to customers without worrying whether unauthorised persons might view the information.
